Prep highlights Sages win regional title in PKs
May 23—CHILLICOTHE — The Monticello bus pulled into McDonald's just before 10 p. m. Friday, and Sages' coach David McDaniel was still trying to get his heart rate back to a normal rhythm.
It had been quite the eventful night. Two scoreless halves was only the start of Friday's Class 1A regional championship match against Peoria Christian. Two more overtime periods without a goal by either team followed.
That meant the regional title would be decided by penalty kicks. Monticello delivered. Four times.
Sophie Burkybile, Lauren Good and Anya Sheppard got the Sages on the board. Then it came down to one last save by goalkeeper Lexi Leatherwood and Alicia Trimble's winner for a 4-3 victory and a regional championship. "We knew what we had to do," McDaniel said.
"I was a little frustrated we couldn't get a goal, but we still worked hard. We had some star players on their side we shut down. We had to play a little extra time.
