The Colorado Avalanche are running out of answers after another collapse against the Vegas Golden Knights . Vegas stunned Colorado 3-1 on Friday night to grab a 2-0 lead in the NHL ‘s Western Conference Final, and history now heavily favors the Golden Knights. NHL insider Chris Johnston pointed out on X that teams winning the first two games on the road before the Stanley Cup Final are 20-1 all-time.

“As Vegas stuns the #avs with two wins at Ball Arena to open the Western Conference Final, this stat becomes relevant: Teams starting 2-0 on the road in the series right before the Stanley Cup Final are 20-1 in NHL history all time,” Johnston wrote. Additionally, since the NHL switched to the conference finals format in 1982, teams leading 2-0 in this round are 13-0 in advancing. That context makes Colorado’s situation look close to impossible.

But Vegas stayed patient and capitalized on mistakes late. Jack Eichel tied the game before setting up Ivan Barbashev for the winner just over two minutes later.

Barbashev later added an empty-netter for the final score. Colorado’s defensive structure broke down under pressure. Devon Toews and Brock Nelson failed to clear the puck cleanly on the deciding sequence, something that rarely happened during the regular season.
