Saints bust out the bats to top Storm Chasers
In a lineup featuring a share of major-league bats attempting to find their mojo, it was someone who has yet to get a taste of “The Show” that swung the biggest stick of all for the Saints on Friday night. Left fielder Hendry Mendez went 3 for 5 with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored as St. Paul rallied to defeat visiting Omaha 9-5 at CHS Field.
The Storm Chasers staked themselves to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but hitting was hanging heavy in the Capital City air as the Saints battled back to forge a 5-5 tie after the third inning. It was all St. Paul from there, as the Saints logged two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings — the last of the runs coming on Mendez’ two-run blast to left center field that also plated Tanner Schobel with the final scores of the contest.
It was Mendez’s third homer of the season and his three hits lifted his batting average this season to . 382 as he attempts to catch the eye of the parent club on the other end of the Twin Cities. Schobel went 2 for 4 after entering the game for shortstop Kaelen Culpepper and taking over at the position for the majority of the game.
Outfielders Kyler Fedko and Matt Wallner each went 2 for 4 with a run scored; Fedko had two RBI, Wallner drove in one run. First baseman Aaron Sabato and catcher Noah Cardenas also each went 2 for 4, Sabato logged one RBI, Cardenas scored twice. Royce Lewis, still trying to find himself after his demotion from the Twins earlier this week, went 1 for 5 while batting third to bring his average in a Saints uniform to .
