The Arizona State Sun Devils are one win from advancing to the Women's College World Series, having beaten No. 2 Texas in Game 1 of the Austin Super Regional on Friday, May 22. ASU's ace Kenzie Brown outdueled Texas standout Teagan Kavan, who won the Most Outstanding Player of the Women's College World Series last year.
Brown allowed only four hits, walking one and striking out 10 in a complete-game masterpiece over the Longhorns, who came into this super regional having won the past three games by a combined 25-1. ASU's Samantha Swan singled in the Sun Devils' first run, scoring Tiare Ho-Ching. The Longhorns answered on a Hannah Wells solo homer in the fourth inning.
In the fifth, Ho-Ching and Tanya Windle delivered consecutive base hits, and, with one out, Swan came through again by scoring both runners on a single to put ASU up 3-1. The Sun Devils weren't done, as Ashleigh Mejia smashed a drive that Texas center fielder Kayden Henry saw bounce off her glove for a double. Nehanda Lewis, who was inserted to run for Swan, scored, but Mejia was thrown out at third base, costing ASU a run.
Citlaly Gutierrez relieved Kavan to start the sixth. The Texas ace gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits, walking two and striking out five. Game 2 is 5 p.
