Brody Pike scored five goals May 22 as Powdersville beat Oceanside Collegiate, 6-1, for the SCHSL Class 3A state championship.

COLUMBIA – Brody Pike collapsed into tearful hugs. The Powdersville senior had just scored five goals in the high school state championship May 22 as the Patriots (27-1) defended their SCHSL Class 3A boys soccer title with a 6-1 win against Oceanside Collegiate at Memorial Stadium. Five goals.

He couldn’t remember if he had ever done that. Maybe in a youth league, he said. When Pike tried to comprehend what it meant for the program and the school and himself, he struggled to control his emotions.

“That’s a big part of it,” Pike said. The other part was his father, the late Charlie Pike, who was Powdersville’s coach when he died of cancer in 2021 at age 55. Brody was 13, not yet on varsity.

“I know he’s looking down,” Brody said. “And he’s really proud right now. ” Pike, who play for UAB, has scored 32 goals this season to go with 19 assists.
