Michigan State Baseball's Postseason Run Comes To An End In Big Ten Quarterfinals
MSU's postseason run is over, and the Spartans finish with a disappointing 24-32 record. Despite upsets earlier in the week, they struggled against Southern California's top pitcher. They'll look to bounce back next season.
The Michigan State Spartans' postseason run in the Big Ten tournament came to a crushing end on May 22, as they lost a dramatic 7-0 game to No. 4 seed Southern California in Omaha, Neb. The Spartans entered the tournament as the No.
12 seed and made it all the way to the quarterfinals after upsets over Purdue and Iowa earlier in the week. Despite struggling with Southern California starter Mason Edwards – who leads the NCAA in strikeouts – MSU managed six hits and four walks but were ineffective with runners on base, going 0-for-14 with runners scoring. The Spartans' pitching staff showed strength as redshirt-freshman Brady Chambers recorded five of the 11 Trojan batters struck out over two innings.
USC scored twice in the first and third innings before a rain delay paused action for nearly two hours, and then delivered three runs in the fifth inning to easily extend their lead to an eventual 7-0 final. MSU's 24-32 record finishes the season with this week's performance marking the sixth time in 11 chances under coach Jake Boss where the Spartans won at least two games in the Big Ten tournament, and they became the first No. 12 seed in Big Ten tournament history to win a game.
