Richard Childress Racing is suspending the use of the No. 8 and will keep it for Kyle Busch's son to use.

The NASCAR community is reeling after the sudden death of legendary driver Kyle Busch , who passed away on Thursday at the age of 41. Busch had just won a Truck Series race on May 15th at Dover, and was preparing for this weekend's crown jewel race in Charlotte, the Coca-Cola 600. The Busch family announced on Thursday that Kyle was hospitalized with a severe illness, and would miss this weekend's race.

Hours later, NASCAR announced that Kyle Busch had died. Busch was scheduled to compete on Friday night at Charlotte in the Truck Series, and several drivers will run tributes on their trucks in honor of Busch. Richard Childress Racing, the team Busch had driven for since 2023, will still field the Cup Series car that Busch would have driven on Sunday, with driver Austin Hill set to fill in.

RCR announced Friday that the organization would not use Busch's No. 8 on the side of the car, and will shift to using the No. 33.

RCR also said that it will hold Busch's stylized No. 8 until his son, 11-year-old Brexton Busch, is ready to use it in NASCAR competition. "Kyle Busch was instrumental in the design of RCRโ€™s stylized No.
