Aston Martin ‘Jonathan Wheatley’ Parking Sign Sparks F1 Frenzy at Canadian GP— Here’s What Really Happened

Yahoo Sports

A reserved parking spot in the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve car park doesn’t usually generate much excitement. This one did. A sign reading “Jonathan Wheatley, Aston Martin ” appeared in the team principals’ car park in Montreal, with many interpreting it as a possible hint towards Wheatley’s next destination.

Given how long this saga has been running, you can understand why. Turns out it’s a false alarm. Per PlanetF1 ‘s Thomas Maher, sources confirm the sign was simply a mistake by the circuit promoter – Wheatley has not signed with Aston Martin, and the situation hasn’t materially changed.

The promoter, Bell GPCanada, confirmed as much in a statement: “We are aware of the printing error that occurred yesterday. The issue has been promptly addressed, we sincerely apologize for any confusion this may have caused. ” Maher on where things stand: “My understanding of it is that negotiations remain ongoing, but nothing is agreed in writing.

” The Longer Story Behind the Sign Wheatley departed Audi just two races into the 2026 F1 championship, with the team’s official explanation citing personal reasons. Reports have suggested he was attracted by the prospect of returning to the UK, having only relocated to Switzerland the previous year. Wheatley has been identified as a key target for current Aston Martin team principal Adrian Newey to succeed him in the role he currently occupies, with Newey eager to step back into a purely technical position.

Newey’s primary focus is design work rather than leading the organisation, and Aston Martin is navigating an extremely troubled start to life with its new works engine partner Honda , with the first Newey Aston Martin chassis primarily undermined by an underpowered and unreliable power unit. Lawrence Stroll has so far responded to the rumour mill. Stroll said “We do things differently here, and while we don’t currently adopt the traditional team principal role that you see elsewhere – it is by design,” which neither confirmed Newey’s status nor addressed Wheatley directly.
