Amateur baseball roundup for May 21: Rays outlast Angels in Sunshine League 13-inning showdown

May 22—ALEXANDRIA, S. D. — The Parkston Rays emerged on top of a Sunshine League amateur baseball marathon contest on Thursday night, edging Alexandria 11-10 in 13 innings.

With two on and two out in the top of the 13th inning tied at 10, Frank Soukup hit a ground ball that was misplayed by Alexandria, allowing Landon Sudbeck to score the eventual winning run. The Angels got the tying run to second base in the bottom of the inning, but the Rays' Ty Neugebauer closed the door with a strikeout to give the Rays their first Sunshine win of the season. Parkston led 7-4 after three innings and 10-4 after six innings before Alexandria put up three runs apiece in the seventh and eighth innings.

Then the teams didn't score again until the 13th inning, when the Rays broke through. The game had a combined 28 hits, with 16 for the Rays, plus 12 errors, including eight from the Angels. Parkston had 21 strikeouts as a pitching staff.

Carter Sommer started and threw six innings, with nine strikeouts, three earned runs and four hits allowed. Nolan Dvorak had 10 strikeouts in five innings of relief, allowing four earned runs and seven hits. Neugebauer then struck out two Angels in two scoreless innings with one hit allowed.

On offense, Sudbeck, Dvorak and Sommer had three hits each, with Sommer driving in two runs for the Rays. For Alexandria, Jackson Harding had two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored, while Pierce Smith had three hits and scored twice and Ben Wilber had two RBIs. Jack Gray started on the mound and allowed six hits and six runs in 2 1/3 innings, and Dakota Munger threw 3 2/3 innings of relief.
