Official I Rachid Ghezzal confirms Lyon exit It came as a surprise to everyone when Olympique Lyonnais announced last summer that Rachid Ghezzal (34) was returning to the club where he had come through the ranks, nearly ten years after leaving for AS Monaco in 2017. A free agent following his departure from Çaykur Rizespor Kulübü in Turkey, the Décines-Charpieu native joined Paulo Fonseca’s squad to bring his wealth of experience and prepare for a future coaching role within the Lyon hierarchy. Unsurprisingly relegated to a supporting role, the Algerian international (22 caps, two goals) ultimately featured in a total of 12 matches across all competitions, providing his only assist of the season away to FC Utrecht (0-1) in the Europa League.

And with his contract due to expire next June, Ghezzal took the opportunity to send a final message to the people of Lyon, before undoubtedly embarking on a new chapter in his life. “Season filled with incredible and difficult moments. Even though I would have liked to have contributed more on the pitch, I am very proud to have had the opportunity to wear this shirt,” he wrote on Instagram .

“Thank you to all of you – players, staff, management – but above all to you, the fans, for your support throughout the season. The best is yet to come. ” GFFN | Léo Aschi
