Jon Sumrall's first season among ESPN's 10 must-know storylines
Florida's Jon Sumrall headlines SEC coaching overhaul entering 2026 college football season.
The list of SEC head coaches will look dramatically different in 2026 after an offseason that saw several programs make changes at the top. Ole Miss, LSU , Auburn , Arkansas and Kentucky all chose to begin new eras — and with the arrival of Jon Sumrall, Florida arguably sits at the center of this conference overhaul. ESPN labeled the SEC's coaching upheaval as one of the biggest storylines in college football after six teams hired new head men this offseason.
The departure of Billy Napier and Sumrall's hiring remains one of the most intriguing moves nationally as the former Tulane coach inherited a program coming off a disastrous 4-8 season. The former Sun Belt Coach of the Year began immediately uprooting the culture at Florida and planting new seeds with the overall mentality in the building as he tries to restore respectability to a once proud program. Rival SEC coaches praised the hiring of former Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner as a " home run " move, while the arrival of several impact transfers instantly elevated Florida's skill position groups.
Florida may be rebuilding, but they are on the clock as pressure begins immediately. But for the Gators to prove they are again relevant, they will need to take down at least a pair of conference heavyweights in October. Florida faces Oklahoma , Texas and Georgia in consecutive weeks during a stretch that may define their season.
