Maurizio Sarri to Napoli might not be certain — here’s why As reported by Corriere dello Sport , Maurizio Sarri’s return to Napoli is not a done deal, and both he and the club have alternatives lined up. The 67-year-old has been one of the leading names to take over from Antonio Conte in the dugout at the Stadio Maradona, but there’s another project on offer should he decide to leave Lazio at the end of the season. Cristiano Giuntoli, former Juve and Napoli sporting director, is set to take over the sporting directorship at Atalanta, and he has his eyes set on Sarri for the head coach role.

Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis, meanwhile, is keen to replace Conte as early as possible going into the summer, though he is not short of options. Max Allegri has been linked with the club in recent weeks, and, according to Sportitalia’s Alfredo Pedullà , had an agreement in place with De Laurentiis last year before Conte agreed to continue. Bologna’s Vincenzo Italiano is also expected to be part of the potential managerial merry-go-round and is currently linked heavily with the Milan job should Max Allegri leave San Siro.

With or without Sarri, Napoli need to move on from the croassroads quickly Despite relinquishing the Serie A tile, Napoli are in a strong position with quite a well-rounded squad and Champions League football secured for next season. Conte’s track record suggests there would hardly have been a better time for Napoli to part ways with him and still be in a strong position. Now, they need to make their next move and quickly.

Sarri is a promising option, someone who is no stranger to the club and the city, who could fuse his footballing identity into this team once again and make them strong yet exhilarating to watch, this time with significantly less pressure than what he experienced in his previous stint. However, if he is inclined to the Atalanta job, then Napoli need to promptly look elsewhere. Allegri would be a safe option, and while he will most certainly not improve the quality of football, he will make the squad competent and perform on multiple fronts.
