HAVE YOUR SAY: Thomas Tuchel’s first World Cup squad has already sparked fierce debate after several high-profile omissions, with fans divided over whether bold decisions or big mistakes have been made ahead of the tournament

England head to the 2026 World Cup carrying the same burden they always do: expectation. Nearly 60 years on from their only major trophy, the Three Lions once again arrive at a tournament with one of the most talented squads in world football – but also with familiar questions hanging over them. Thomas Tuchel ’s first major tournament squad has already sparked debate, with several big-name omissions signalling a ruthless new era under the German.

Harry Maguire, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Adam Wharton are among the notable absentees, while Tuchel appears willing to prioritise balance, intensity and tactical discipline over reputation alone. Reacting to the squad, Independent subscriber drwhoman said: “These choices could haunt him if the usual English expectation of inevitable success comes to nought. Just as examples, Lewis-Skelly sounds very odd given that he spends most of his time on the Arsenal bench while Stones fitness cannot be guaranteed, his best days being behind him.

” While TotiCalling had the opposite view: “Big names are not important but those who are fit and play well now. England has a chance to win. ” Bradbyrn had called it even before the squad was named, commenting: “No point in having wealth of experience if you miss half the tournament.

” Yet there is no shortage of talent available. Jude Bellingham is already one of the world’s standout midfielders, while Harry Kane arrives as England’s all-time leading scorer and one of Europe’s most consistent forwards. Around them is a squad packed with elite-level experience and attacking quality, from Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice to emerging stars like Morgan Rogers, giving England one of the strongest and deepest groups heading into the tournament.
