Over the years, it has been known as a variety of names and has been hosted at several different courses around D-FW. The tournament itself was established in 1944, but first known as the Texas Victory Open and golf legend Byron Nelson was the first winner. In 1968, it was renamed the Byron Nelson Golf Classic to honor the Texas native who was raised in Fort Worth and the tournament has been named after Nelson ever since.
That year it also was moved to Preston Trail Golf Club. After spending 1968-1982 at Preston Trails Golf Club, the tournament has moved around to Las Colinas Sports Club (1983-85), TPC at Las Colinas (1986-93), Las Colinas Four Seasons (1994-2017) and Trinity Forest Golf Club (2018-19) before landing at its current location, McKinney's TPC Craig Ranch . The tournament has been held at Craig Ranch since 2020 , though the first tournament there was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic.
