The rain didn't show, but plenty of teams did in Thursday's games

The postseason started in some sports as the regular season wrapped up in others. Here's what happened in RI high school sports on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

🎾Game of the Day Being the hero had such a nice feel to it, Frankie Arnold decided to do it twice. With the Westerly softball team’s season on the line, Arnold came through with the game-tying RBI single in the seventh inning to keep things going. Her next at-bat was even bigger, as Arnold’s two-out single brought Ella Keegan home to give the Bulldogs’ a 5-4 walk-off win over Smithfield in the preliminary round of the RIIL Division I playoffs.

Arnold has been asked to do a lot for Westerly this spring and has come up huge all season long. Thursday was no exception. Smithfield was scrappy with its offense, manufacturing runs in the first, third and fifth, but the Bulldogs answered the call every time.

In the seventh, with the game tied at three, Joy Matteson worked a leadoff walk against Arnold, and managed to move to third after a sacrifice bunt. Sophia Parrillo followed and hit a sacrifice fly to give the Sentinels a 4-3 lead. Alison Maranda opened the bottom half of the seventh with a single and Payton Jarvis pinch ran for her.
