Rams Commit to Matthew Stafford With New Contract

โ€ขYahoo Sports

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has signed a one-year contract extension worth up to $60 million with a base salary of $55 million. There are incentives in place that can raise the dealโ€™s value to the $60 million ceiling. With the new contract in place, Stafford is now on the books for two more years with the Rams, with up to $105 million left on the table.

Stafford is 38 years old, turning 39 during the postseason, making this likely his last contract as a professional quarterback. He is coming off an MVP season, in which he shone against a loaded NFC West and powered the NFLโ€™s best offense by the metrics. โ€œHopefully, Iโ€™m not at this event and weโ€™re getting ready for another game at SoFi. โ€ Stafford led the NFL with 4,707 passing yards, while also posting a career-high 46 passing touchdowns and just eight interceptions. How does the new contract affect the Rams?

With their franchise quarterback tied down for two years, the Rams can begin planning for their immediate and long-term future. Assuming he does not suffer a major injury โ€” he does have lingering back issues โ€” Stafford should see out the deal, meaning rookie quarterback Ty Simpson will have two full seasons to learn behind Stafford before getting a start. Simpson will follow a Jordan Love-esque path to becoming the starter, sitting on the sidelines and taking in all the different parts involved in being a franchise leader.
