He is Duke head coach Jon Scheyer, a former Blue Devils player who won the 2010 national title under Krzyzewski. That history matters because Duke did not hand him the programme by accident. Scheyer was named as Krzyzewski’s successor before taking over for the 2022-23 season.
Krzyzewski’s public backing also strengthened the handover. He said Scheyer was clearly ready for this opportunity, which explains why NBA teams would study him seriously. Dallas must judge Scheyer on NBA fit, not Duke legacy The danger for Dallas is letting pedigree do too much work.
Scheyer has been shaped by one of college basketball’s defining figures, but the Mavericks job would ask different questions. The NBA is not built around recruiting, campus culture, or long-term programme control. It is built around star management, professional pressure, roster limits, and immediate results.
