Way-too-early 2026 Bucs game preview: Dallas Cowboys

Yahoo Sports

We have another way-too-early game preview as we look at their matchup with the Dallas Cowboys.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will hit the road in Week 5 for one of their toughest scheduling spots of the season as they travel to Dallas to face the Cowboys on Thursday Night Football. After finishing a three-game homestand against Cleveland, Minnesota, and Green Bay, the Buccaneers now must quickly turn around on a short week and head into one of the NFL’s toughest road environments under the primetime lights. The Storyline The biggest storyline entering this matchup is the short week challenge.

Thursday Night Football games are difficult enough on their own, but Tampa Bay will be dealing with the added wear and tear of four physical games against multiple playoff teams to open the season before immediately traveling to Dallas with limited recovery and preparation time. The game also represents another major primetime opportunity. Tampa Bay has continued to become one of the NFL’s more featured teams nationally under Mayfield, and this matchup against Dallas will likely draw major attention given both franchises’ playoff expectations entering the season after disappointing finishes in 2025.

Key Matchups Buccaneers offensive line vs. Cowboys pass rush Playing on a short week against Dallas’ front is far from ideal. The Cowboys have consistently built their defense around speed and pressure, and Tampa Bay’s offensive line will need to protect Baker Mayfield in a loud road environment with limited prep time.

Communication and pass protection adjustments become even more important on Thursday nights when teams have fewer practice reps available. Even without Micah Parsons, Dallas has re-tooled their pass rush to include Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, and Rashan Gary. That's not to mention adding Caleb Downs in the draft to bolster their secondary.
