Hummels feels Germany's 2026 World Cup squad is one "without any major controversies" Germany's 2014 World Cup winning centre-half Mats Hummels feels there were no surprises after Julian Nagelsmann announced his squad to travel for the 2026 edition of the tournament next month. “For me, it's a squad without any major controversies. The big question was really just whether Manuel Neuer would be there," he explained, speaking with Magenta TV.

"The expectation in the last week or two was that he would be – provided he stays healthy. Then there are two or three 50/50 decisions. I'm thinking of Amiri, Groß, and Malik Thiaw.

“Were there were others who could have come along? In my eyes, they aren't any spectacular or controversial [selections]. They're more like players who won't be in the starting eleven but still have their chances of playing,” he said.

Perhaps reflecting a lot of the nation's public perception, the former Dortmund and Bayern Munich man isn't too optimistic, but feels Nagelsmann could tweak a few things to boost their chances of winning the tournament. "The squad is generally exactly what it has been in recent years: good, but not a top favorite for the World Cup title. But good enough to still be able to do it.

“Nevertheless, it has a few areas for improvement, which is to be expected from any team. If they can address those, they have a chance of playing a really good tournament,” he concluded.
