UGA alumnus makes record $10 million donation for Georgia basketball
UGA alumnus Adam Wexler, founder of Prize Picks, made a $10 million donation to support the Georgia men's basketball program. Here's why.
GREENSBORO—In an era in college sports when schools are searching for ways to fill their coffers, Georgia athletics has secured the largest donation in its history. Adam Wexler, a 2007 graduate who went on to become the founder of fantasy sports operator Prize Picks, has made a $10 million commitment to support the Georgia men’s basketball program. It will be used for personnel and operating epxenses within the program with a portion going to the ‘Athletic Director Excellence Fund’, the school said.
That fund can be used at the discretion of athletic director Josh Brooks. Brooks announced the donation on Thursday May 21 at the athletic board meeting. “The gift is expected to serve as an anchor commitment supporting the continual evolution, long-term competitive standing and national ambitions of the Georgia basketball program,” the school said in a release.
Wexler graduated from UGA’s Terry College of Business and his father, Alan, was a two-sport football and track athlete and editor-in-chief of the school newspaper. “There has never been a more interesting time in the history of collegiate athletics for donors to make a difference,” Wexler, now CEO of The Hidden Jams music discovery platform, said in a school release. “I’d love for this to be the start of something much bigger for the Bulldog community.
” Prize Picks, based in Atlanta, sold a majority stake to lottery operator Allwyn International for $1. 533 billion that was completed in January. Prize Picks allows players to bet on predictions of how athletes will perform in a game.
