The former Boston Red Sox veterans appear to be thriving with a National League leader as their old team struggles.

The team has been desperate for a surge in the standings since it parted ways with long-time manager Alex Cora, and perhaps the results in Kansas City can drive a larger boost.

“For just the second time this season, the Boston Red Sox completed a three-game sweep, this time of the Kansas City Royals,” Jen McCaffrey wrote for The Athletic . “With a 4-3 win over the Royals on Wednesday, the Red Sox have now won seven of their last nine road games, helping them move to 14-13 on the road. Now they must find a way to carry that momentum back to Fenway Park, where they’ve gone just 8-14.

With MVP Award candidate catcher Drake Baldwin sidelined by injury, the Atlanta Braves brought in former Red Sox backstop Sandy Leon as a replacement. And on Wednesday, that meant catching for his fellow Red Sox World Series champion Chris Sale, with the pair of reunited veterans leading the Braves to their MLB-leading 34th win of the season.

“That guy can lead me through the woods blindfolded,” Sale said of Leon after limiting the Miami Marlins to four hits and one run with eight strikeouts in seven innings, according to MLB. com’s Perla Paredes . “He's been doing this for a long time, and just his calmness, his confidence, his ability, his game-calling and the way he receives the baseball.
