LeBron James liked an Instagram post urging him to return to the Cavaliers, setting off speculation that he could do just that.

The consensus around the NBA seems to be that if LeBron James leaves the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason, he will return to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a third stint with them. One reporter, Brandon "Scoop B" Robinson, said this week that James and the Cavaliers "have mutual interest in a return. " There are signs that James would, at the very least, like to remain with the Lakers for his 24th season in the NBA.

But he liked an Instagram post urging him to return to the Cavs, which has sparked speculation about what he will ultimately do in free agency several weeks from now. Bron liked this post on IG šŸ‘€ (h/t @deadboylyfee ) pic. twitter.

com/odcKMpxd5k — NBACentral (@TheDunkCentral) May 20, 2026 James, of course, was drafted by Cleveland in 2003 out of high school, allowing him to play near his hometown of Akron, Ohio. He spent his first seven seasons in the league with Cleveland before going to the Miami Heat for four seasons, only to return to the Cavs in 2014 for four more years. Right now, the Cavs are in the Eastern Conference finals, and they blew a 22-point fourth-quarter lead to the New York Knicks and lost in overtime in Game 1 on Tuesday.

Still, an argument could be made that, should they add James to their current core, they would have a great shot at winning the NBA championship next season. The question is how they will be able to offer James enough money under the salary cap, as they're currently jammed against the second apron.
