8 Cowboys free agents remain unsigned as OTAs begin, including 3 starters
As NFL clubs move into the next phase of the offseason, unsigned veterans are coming to a stark realization. That includes multiple Cowboys.
The NFL world is organizing itself yet again. Although the schedules for all 32 clubs is different, the league is entering Phase 3 of the offseason program, Organized Team Activities. Better known as OTAs, the practices are still voluntary, but they continue the transition of player and coach interaction as things ramp up towards the mandatory events, minicamp and eventually training camp.
For the Dallas Cowboys , their OTA commencement doesn't occur for another 10 days , with the first session June 1-2 and June 4. But other clubs have gotten going over the past week, which crystalizes the fact that many veterans are beginning to realize they may be out of a job this coming season. Others who are still free agents will hear their phones ring when injuries occur or when it becomes clear that a roster hole went unfilled.
It's only a small handful of vets who are remaining free agents by choice, not wanting to work over the hot summer months. The Cowboys have eight free agents who were with them in 2025 spread across the multiple categories, a list that includes three full-time starters. Safety Donovan Wilson and linebacker Kenneth Murray are probably the poster children for 2025's inept defense.
Murray was a failed trade acquisition who played exactly how he had in his previous stops around the league. He started 16 of 17 games, and made some of the worst decisions fans have seen when it came to identifying proper plans of attacking the ball carrier. Wilson was a bit different in that he had shown talent as a box safety in the past, but seemed to really struggle with the (lack of) direction under DC Matt Eberflus.
