Rico Verhoeven recreates mother’s photos at pyramids after her death during fight camp
The kickboxing icon, who faces Oleksandr Usyk in Giza on Saturday, said his mother passed away during his fight camp
Rico Verhoeven has paid tribute to his recently-deceased mother by recreating photos that she took at the pyramids of Giza 30 years ago. On Saturday, Verhoeven will box Oleksandr Usyk for the latter’s WBC heavyweight title, with the fight remarkably taking place at the pyramids. The bout will be just the second for Verhoeven, 37, in a boxing ring, but he is considered one of the greatest kickboxers of all time.
Ahead of his fight with the unbeaten Usyk, 39, Verhoeven revealed that his mother recently passed away – and that he was moved to recreate old holiday photos that showed her at the pyramids. “I lost my mother earlier this year, and especially these last years it was hard for her to be at the events,” the Dutchman told The Ring after sharing his – and his mother’s – photos on Instagram. “So, a lot of times she was just watching on TV.
And I know now she is with me everywhere, everywhere I go, so that’s a really nice and comfortable feeling. Yeah, I feel blessed to have her as my guardian angel right now. “I was really thankful that I got the time to [recreate those photos], to experience that and really be in that moment and create that – like, that same picture that she made, like around 30 years ago.

Then, like, how is it a positive thing? It is not, but I have to do something with it to make it easier for me to cope with.
