While many NBA fans had no hope of the New York Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers ' first game coming anywhere close to the Western Conference's opening game of the Conference Finals, the East's game did also need an additional period to determine a winner. It certainly took a while for the Knicks to wake up, and they even trailed by as many as 22 points with 7:40 left in the fourth quarter.
However, Jalen Brunson proved yet again why he is one of the league's most clutch players. The star guard scored 15 points (7/9 FG), including 11 straight, in the fourth quarter to drag New York back into the game and stand the team's home crowd back to their feet. While the Cavaliers did give up the lead as a team, many NBA fans were quick to notice how involved James Harden was in New York's comeback.
The Knicks frequently ran isolation plays to get Brunson on Harden at the top of the arc, and he repeatedly got past him to the hoop. The 36-year-old's best days are certainly behind him, but his frequent turnovers and inability to play defense in Game 1 largely held his team back from an otherwise great game. New York's bench has been a slept-on feature of their team.
