As The News-Press and Naples Daily News prepare for the 16th high school sports award show, let's look back at the first 15.

The Southwest Florida Sports Awards returns for its 16th straight go-around on Wednesday, May 27. The one thing about the annual event held by The News-Press and Naples Daily News that honors the area's top high school athletes is that it is always changing. New venues.

New sports. New awards. Global pandemics.

Through it all, the night has brought together the area's high school stars for a community celebration, and for many, a final sendoff from stellar high school athletic careers. For some, it's a beacon for what they can yet accomplish. As we prepare for the 16th Annual Southwest Florida High School Sports Awards event, which will be in a new home at Alico Arena on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University, it seems fitting to look back at the last 15 years.

There is another significant change to this year's show. We're going back to how we started. Unlike in recent years where we selected finalists for the Player of the Year awards and announced the winner at the show, this year's Player of the Year winners will all be notified pre-show and are invited to come and be celebrated.
