Former 49ers undrafted RB finds new home with 5th different NFL team

A former San Francisco 49ers running back who was once an intriguing undrafted rookie has a new NFL home. The Chicago Bears are adding RB Salvon Ahmed according to Jordan Schultz. Ahmed spent his college career with the University of Washington before going unselected in the 2020 NFL draft.

He didn't stick with the 49ers beyond training camp and was let go at final cuts in late August. A lack of preseason games because of the COVID-19 pandemic might have ultimately doomed Ahmed's chances to stay with San Francisco. He lost out on a roster spot to fellow UDFA Jamycal Hasty who sat behind veterans Raheem Mostert, Jerick McKinnon and former UDFA Jeff Wilson Jr.

Had Ahmed been able to see time in preseason games it might've allowed him to sneak ahead of Hasty and make the 53-man roster. Fortunately for Ahmed his time off of an NFL roster didn't last long. He wound up being claimed by the Miami Dolphins off waivers.

Ahmed spent four years with the Dolphins where he put up 319 rushing yards and three touchdowns in six games as a rookie. He was never quite that productive again, posting just 274 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 88 carries across 32 games in his final three seasons in South Beach. Ahmed bounced around to the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts practice squads in 2024, and then he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in training camp with the Colts last season.
