The urgency of that reality refocused Riverton, which regrouped and rolled in the second “if necessary” game 10-5 to advance to the best-of-3 6A state championship series beginning on Thursday at BYU. Riverton coach Whitley Haimin said there was a subtle shift in mindset between the games, and it paid dividends right away as the ‘Wolves jumped out fast with four runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Payton Sanchez led off the inning with a solo home run and Riverton never looked back, stretching the lead to 10-2 after four innings. “Super proud and very confident going into this weekend. I can’t say enough good things about our kids.

I feel like they’re very resilient. We made it a little bit harder, but overall, don’t want to take anything away from Davis. They are a great squad.
