LSU Tigers football coach Lane Kiffin made a move that was long expected late on Wednesday night: he brought on national championship head coach Ed Orgeron in a specialized recruiting role to his coaching staff.

Orgeron will be the team’s special assistant to recruiting and defense. Per ESPN’s Pete Thamel , “Important to note in this hire, the changes in recruiting rules mean that Orgeron will be able to go on the road and recruit for LSU. He's an all-time greater recruiter, and he has deep familiarity with LSU and Kiffin to pitch them to recruits.

” Orgeron recently sided with Kiffin after a controversial Vanity Fair article was released where the first-year LSU head coach offered up, unsolicited, negative stories, though without names, from recruits about racism in Oxford, Mississippi. Like Kiffin, Orgeron was a head coach for the Ole Miss Rebels , though he didn’t see nearly the amount of success Kiffin had. With that said, Orgeron’s comments make more sense now with the hiring.

It was initially expected that Kiffin could potentially consider “Coach O” for the Tigers’ defensive coordinator position during the transition from Ole Miss, but Blake Baker was kept in his role in Baton Rouge. Lane Kiffin proves he gets it with Ed Orgeron hire On so many levels, Kiffin just proved genius by bringing Orgeron back into College Football after four years (and change) away from the sport. On an emotional level, LSU fans can now remember the Brian Kelly before-times, when Orgeron’s squad was a national championship outfit.
