Steelers HC Mike McCarthy says Packers wanted to draft Mason Rudolph
The Steelers have four quarterbacks and one of them, Mason Rudolph, is a guy HC Mike McCarthy wanted in Green Bay.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have a quarterback predicament. The team is in the midst of OTAs and have four quarterbacks on the roster. We all know that with Aaron Rodgers signed, he's the starter if he's healthy.
But this leaves Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and Drew Allar battling for two spots on the depth chart. It is easy to assume that it will be Howard and Allar rounding out the depth chart and the veteran Rudolph the odd man out. But the more we consider this situation, the less confident we are that McCarthy will simply trade or release Rudolph and leave the team will zero experience behind Rodgers.
McCarthy talked about Rudolph on Wednesday and after hearing that he wanted to draft Rudolph in the 2018 NFL draft, the more we wonder if Rudolph doesn't have an inside line on sticking with the roster. "Wanted to draft Mason to replace Rodgers someday, Packers waited for 2020 instead," McCarthy admitted. The Steelers selected Rudolph in the third round in 2018 in hopes of having the guy to replace Ben Roethlisberger.
This never came to fruition and Rudolph has become more of a career backup. Meanwhile, the Packers held off until 2020 and ended up selecting Jordan Love, who is the team's new franchise signal-caller.
