Evans’ gem, Alvarez’s two homers lead Miami to ACC tournament win over Stanford

Yahoo Sports

The Hurricanes rolled to a second-round, 11-2 victory over Stanford in their first game in the ACC tournament in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman catcher Alonzo Alvarez hit a pair of home runs, and starting pitcher Rob Evans pitched seven strong innings in No. 5 seed Miami’s win.

The Hurricanes, who had a first-round bye, fell behind 1-0 in the second inning but quickly seized the lead back. Alvarez homered to start the scoring, and Miami added runs on a Fabio Peralta single and a Jake Ogden fielder’s choice. Max Galvin and Vance Sheahan added RBIs later in the game, and Alvarez hit his second home run in the sixth inning.

While the Hurricanes’ offense was putting up runs, Evans was keeping the Cardinal in check. The Miami ace pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on four hits. He struck out six batters.

Miami will face fourth-seeded Boston College, which went 36-20 in the regular season with a 17-13 conference record, in the quarterfinals at 3 p. m. on Thursday.

The game was originally scheduled for 7 p. m. , but the conference moved the start time up because of inclement weather in the forecast.
