Stars take game one in pitcher's duel

Western Boone started off its final Monon Athletic Conference series of the year on a high note on Tuesday evening, topping Southmont 1-0. The Stars got the game's only run in the top of the third inning. Cale Scagnoli walked with one out and advanced to second when Quinn Westerfeld was hit by a pitch.

Two batters later with two outs, Layton Yancey lined a 2-2 pitch into center field to plate Scagnoli. It was one of just four hits for the Stars, with Mason Foster, Kahne Reid and Owen Howe also collecting hits. Howell was 1-for-2 with two walks.

That run was more than enough run support for Westerfeld, who threw a complete game shut out for the Stars. He took a no-hitter into the sixth, when he allowed his first hit with two outs in the inning, but got a ground out on the next pitch to strand two runners on base. Southmont also got a lead-off double in the seventh, but Westerfeld retired the next three batters to end the game.

Westerfeld finished with 12 strikeouts, matching his career high he set earlier this year against Greencastle. Western Boone is scheduled to play Twin Lakes for senior night on Wednesday, then host Southmont for game two of the conference series on Thursday.
