Earlier this week, the University of Virginia announced that Lars Tiffany would not return as head coach of the Cavaliers. He led the Cavs to two national championships over 10 successful seasons, but a short press release was all UVA sent out to indicate Tiffany was gone. His overall record with Virginia was 108-51.
Why did Virginia get rid of Lars Tiffany? Virginia hasn't made clear what exactly went into the dismissal of Tiffany. The Cavaliers did miss the NCAA tournament in 2025, and then they lost at home in the first round this season to Georgetown, so those results couldn't have helped Tiffany's cause.
The two-time national champ had fallen just a bit off the pace he had set earlier in his tenure, but he had also had the kind of success that isn't often parted ways with. Virginia also isn't a lacrosse program that changes very often. From 1993 through 2016, Dom Starsia was Virginia's head coach, and then Tiffany handled the last decade.
