Mets pitching prospect set for debut tonight, filling in for injured ace
The New York Mets are turning to youth as they try to navigate another major injury setback. Pitching prospect Zach Thornton is expected to make his MLB debut Wednesday night against the Washington Nationals, stepping into a rotation spot that suddenly became available after the loss of one of the team’s most important pitchers, Clay Holmes. For a Mets team searching for answers, Thornton could be getting a major opportunity at exactly the right time.

Holmes had unexpectedly become one of the Mets most valuable pitchers this season, performing at an ace-like level before suffering a fractured fibula after being struck by a ball off the bat of Spencer Jones. The good news for New York is that Holmes may avoid surgery.
The bad news is that he is still expected to miss significant time. That means somebody has to step in. Now that responsibility falls to Thornton.
