Speaking at a press conference formally introducing Nashville as 2030's Super Bowl host city on May 20, Hall of Fame broadcaster and Nashville Super Bowl committee co-chair Jim Nantz said Music City will top the charts. Peter O'Reilly, the NFL's VP for league events, said Super Bowl 64 at the new Nissan Stadium won't just be a game-changer for Nashville, but for the NFL and the future of the Super Bowl.
Tennessee Titans CEO Burke Nihill said the goal is to "reinvent and redefine" the Super Bowl. "Reinventing the Super Bowl" sounds ludicrously ambitious. It's like setting out to improve the Coca-Cola secret formula or coming up with a new way to enjoy a sunny summer day.
The Super Bowl is the world's biggest event. It's the big event against which all other big events are judged. It's broadcast in nearly 200 countries and attracts millions of tourists who just want to be near the stadium on gameday.
The formula that made the Super Bowl the most popular event in American history seems pretty good. Nashville's got other ideas. "I’m a fan of the phrase ‘The lightbulb wasn’t invented by the continuous improvement of the candle,' " Nihill said.
