Russell moves on a free transfer following the end of his contract with Barnsley and will rejoin the Stags after a loan spell during the second half of this season. The 25-year-old scored five times in 24 appearances, with 21 of those coming in League One as Mansfield finished 10th in the table, the club's highest position since 1987.
Boss Nigel Clough described the deal for Russell as "another important signing". "Jon has impressed immensely since arriving in January and got goals for us from midfield which is a rare commodity these days," Clough told the club website. Russell is the second piece of business done by the Stags in the last week after forward Tyler Roberts signed a new one-year contract on 12 May.
