Jakwon Morris holding true to himself in jump to Big Ten
May 20—CHAMPAIGN — Illinois defensive backs coach Corey Parker did not anticipate the crowd waiting for him when he pulled up to the Holiday Inn to meet Jakwon Morris. Morris didn't make the more than 500-mile trip from Tupelo, Miss. , to Champaign by himself.
He was joined by his mom and dad, Sharon Morris and David Gates, one of his brothers, multiple sisters and some of his nephews. "'Everybody wanted to see me off to school, coach,'" said Parker about what Morris told him when he got to the hotel. "'This was important.
'" Morris earned nearly three dozen scholarship offers during his two seasons at Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia, Miss. They trended FCS and Group of Five until last fall. Southern California offered on Oct.
12 and Morris committed to the Trojans the next day. That didn't stop Illinois, Arkansas, Kentucky, Purdue, West Virginia and Mississippi from getting involved in the next month. Morris flipped his commitment from USC to Illinois on Nov.
27, signed with the Illini on Dec. 3 and enrolled on Jan. 20 to start the next stage of his college football career.
