LSU Eliminates Oklahoma in SEC Tournament Opener
One down, four to go
LSU’s final stand began last night in Hoover and the Tigers (30-27) extended its season by another day and knocked out Oklahoma (32-21) 6-2. “I thought we played really good baseball tonight,” Jay Johnson said after the win. “We pitched well and we hit well;; if we do that, we have a chance to win the next game we play.
” LSU did in fact pitch well, as the trio of Grant Fontenot, Gavin Guidry, and Deven Sheerin combined to limit Oklahoma to just two runs—only one earned—six hits, 13 strikeouts and, most importantly, three walks. Guidry (5-3) was credited with the win, while Sheerin earned his fifth save of the season. Guidry and Sheerin pitched 3.
1 innings each. Derek Curiel got LSU on the board first with an RBI in the third inning, but Oklahoma tied the game in the bottom of frame with a run-scoring single. Oklahoma then pushed across an unearned run in the fourth, but LSU responded with a 3-spot in the top of the fifth.
Curiel drove in his second run of the night with an RBI double to tie the game; then, with runners on second and third, Oklahoma third basemen Camden Johnson committed a throwing error trying to throw Omar Serna, and the miscue allowed LSU to plate two. ✌️More Tigers Come On Home @Monster_Milam99 | SECN pic. twitter.
