Playoff roundup: Mardela softball, Decatur baseball advance to MPSSAA championships
Stephen Decatur Baseball and Mardela Softball advanced to the MPSSAA state championship games this weekend after winning in the semifinals on Tuesday.
The State Championship Games are set for high school baseball and softball teams in Maryland's MPSSAA. And two undefeated teams from the Bayside South will be taking part in it this weekend after winning their state semifinal games on Tuesday. Stephen Decatur Baseball and Mardela Softball each won their semifinal matchups on Tuesday evening, May 19, continuing their attempts to bring state championships back to Maryland's Eastern Shore.
Mardela will be attempting to repeat as a state champion, while Decatur is on the verge of winning the school's first ever MPSSAA baseball title. Here is how things unfolded for Decatur Baseball and Mardela Softball in the semifinals on Tuesday: Mardela cruises to softball state championship game, back-to-back titles in reach Very few teams have been able to give the undefeated Mardela Warriors trouble this season, as the reigning state champions have often cruised on their way to dominant victories. Tuesday's 11-1 state semifinal victory over South Carroll was another example of Mardela's dominance, as they advanced with ease to the MPSSAA Class 1A Softball State Championship Game.
Mardela's ace pitcher Ava Twilley allowed only 1 run and 1 hit in the game, while recording 11 strikeouts on the day. Twilley also hit a two-run double when she came to the plate in the first inning. Additional contributions at the plate included Abby Campbell going 2-3 with 2 RBIs, Camryn Dorr recording 2 RBIs and scoring 3 runs and Lexie Guy having 2 hits, 2 walks a 2 runs scored in the victory.
Last season saw Mardela win its first softball state title in 45 years. Now they are on the verge of going back-to-back. Next up for the Warriors will be the Class 1A State Championship Game against Boonsboro.
