May 19—GRAND FORKS — Nelson County junior Dagan Slade lives in Michigan, N. D. , about 42 miles from Northwood — the home of Hatton-Northwood senior Elizabeth Pinke.
Michigan's population is 277. Northwood's population is 1,046. Neither town has a running track.
Neither community has seen much warm weather this spring. Still, the two small-town girls are proving to be two of the nation's best shot put throwers. "Small towns come with a little more grit," Pinke said.
At the Northeast Regional track and field meet last weekend in Mayville, Pinke won the shot put in 48 feet, 7. 75 inches. Slade was next at 47-7.
Pinke's throw was the No. 14 high school throw in the nation this season. Slade's was No.
