Big third inning leads Brookings past Mitchell softball
May 19—MITCHELL — The Mitchell High School softball team closed out its regular season on Monday with a 7-0 loss to Brookings in a rain-shortened Eastern South Dakota Conference matchup at McWhirter Field. The game was called early due to heavy rain, with the Bobcats holding a seven-run advantage after three innings. Mitchell finished the regular season with a 3-13 record and will now await its postseason matchup.
The Class AA SoDak 16 round is set for Tuesday, May 26. Brookings (9-6) broke the game open in the third inning with a five-run frame. Kalla Foerster delivered an RBI triple during the rally, while Ella Psyk added a sacrifice fly that plated two runs.
Mitchell struggled to generate offense throughout the shortened contest. The Kernels managed just one baserunner as Iris Ackman drew the team's lone walk. Mitchell was held hitless and committed three defensive errors.
Rylee Jennings got the start in the circle for the Kernels. The junior right-hander worked three innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on three hits with five strikeouts and six walks. Ramsie Hinricher paced the Bobcats offensively, finishing 1-for-1 with two RBIs and a walk.
Foerster and Grace Romsa also recorded hits for Brookings. Psyk earned the win in the circle for Brookings after tossing two scoreless innings. She did not allow a hit, struck out two and walked one batter in the victory.
