Keyser, Hampshire, Frankfort, Paw Paw win playoff openers; Petersburg, Moorefield lose

ELKINS, W. Va. — Led by a Lucas Williamson gem on the mound, No.

5 seed Keyser edged No. 4 Elkins, 2-1, in the Class AAA, Region II playoffs Monday. Williamson allowed an unearned run in 6 1/3 innings, fanning 10, and Mikey Mongold got the final two outs for the save.

Layne Zacot came up with the winning Golden Tornado hit, an RBI line-drive single in the fifth. The tying run crossed on a wild pitch earlier in the frame. Keyser (11-16) was led at the plate by two-hit days by Mongold and Hunter Harr.

Mongold tripled and Harr doubled. Braden Cooper had a pair of base hits for Elkins. He was also the losing pitcher in a complete-game effort, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits in seven frames of work.

Keyser heads to No. 1 Bridgeport in a winners bracket game on Tuesday at 6 p. m.
