Florida football spent its first spring under Jon Sumrall developing a tougher mindset while learning new offensive and defensive schemes. How that will play out for the Florida Gators in 2026 under Sumrall remains to be seen as UF looks to bounce back from a dismal 4-8 season in 2025. Florida is ranked ninth out of 16 teams in USA Today's SEC spring power rankings .
UF returns five starters on offense and five starters on defense. Sumrall turned over close to half the roster from the 2025 season with 20 incoming freshmen and 30 transfers. The starting quarterback competition between Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo and returning redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr.
will extend into fall drills. "The way I want them to do everything is with urgency," Sumrall said. "I think for some of them, that’s a little bit new.
I want them to walk urgently in the building. I want them – I don’t like casual behavior, and complacency’s a killer. If you think because you did something one week, it’s gonna happen the next week, you’re going to be exposed.
