WC eliminates McLennan; loses to Midland in super regional finals
The Weatherford College baseball team reached the final round of the super regional tournament, but came up short as Midland College will represent Region V in the upcoming NJCAA Div. I World Series. After five previous losses to No.
10 McLennan Community College this season, the No. 21 Coyotes got their revenge when it mattered most, eliminating MCC with a 10-8 win Saturday at Roger Williams Ballpark. That meant only two teams were left: Weatherford and Midland.
The No. 9 Chaparrals took the second game of the day, 13-1, and are headed to Grand Junction, Colorado. WC finished the season with a 41-20 overall record.
This is the Coyotes’ second consecutive year to reach the super regional finals. In the Midland game, Weatherford struck first but could not contain the Chaps’ offense. WC’s Jake Overstreet delivered an RBI single in the first inning to give Weatherford an early lead.
Midland broke the game open in the third with five runs, highlighted by AJ Velarde’s 3-run double that made it 6-1. Velarde added a 3-run homer in the fifth as part of a 6-RBI performance, leading MC’s 13-hit attack. Overstreet finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and two walks to pace the Coyotes, while Austin Godwin, Irons and Kyzer Harrington each added a hit.
