Mets call up another top prospect, cutting veteran in the process
The youth movement in Queens continues. The Mets called up their ninth-ranked (Baseball America) prospect , outfielder Nick Morabito, according to reports on Tuesday. Will Sammon of The Athletic was the first to report Morabito’s promotion.
The move comes after news surfaced that the team designated struggling outfielder Austin Slater for assignment. Morabito, who graduated from Gonzaga College High School in D. C.
, could make his debut against the Nationals this week. Morabito had a . 754 OPS in 41 games at Triple-A Syracuse this season, but is better known for his speed, having stolen 144 bases in his minor league career, and defense.
The 23-year-old 2022 second-round pick is part of a trio of top prospects recalled last week, along with center fielder A. J. Ewing and Zach Thornton, who will pitch on Wednesday against the Nationals.
Morabito brings an ability to get on base and is a strong defender in the outfield, like the Mets’ other outfield-prospect promotions Carson Benge and Ewing.
