High school girls golf: Woods Cross leads 5A by 2 strokes in quest for repeat, Skyline freshman in the medalist lead

High school girls 5A golf championship at Glendale Golf Course in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. | Scott G Winterton, Deseret News Skyline freshman Anushka Rajeev leads a crowded field of golfers within three strokes of each other after the opening round of the 5A state tournament on Monday. Rajeev shot a 2-under 70 after carding an even-par back nine and leads Brighton’s Claire Olafsson and Woods Cross’ Tess Poulsen by one stroke.

Reigning 5A champ, Woods Cross’ Whitni Johnson, is only two back after an even-par 72, while Woods Cross’ Vivian Oaks and Brighton’s Catherine Cook shot 1-over 73s and are very much within striking distance. One of the tournament favorites, Salem Hills’ Navy Hubbs, got into trouble early and was 6-over after 7, but she played the last nine holes 1-under. If anyone is capable of making a move from the pack it’s her.

A year ago, she shot a 75 on Day 1 and a 70 on Day 2 to finish runner-up. The rally for the team title is shaping up to be a two-team race between Woods Cross and Skyline. The defending state champion Wildcats shot an opening-round 314 on Monday, with Skyline just two shots back with a 316.
