No further update has been made available on the status of Boston Red Sox veteran leader Trevor Story as he continues to seek opinions on a sports hernia that may require surgery.

His absence could last up to 10 weeks should surgery be deemed necessary. This leaves a hole in the middle of the infield that interim manager Chad Tracy has chosen to fill with Andruw Monasterio for the time being. However, second baseman Marcelo Mayer has already been floated as a potential long-term replacement.

Tracy said he is considering the idea, but has not given it much thought, with Story still expected to return. Mayer himself embraces a potential position change. "Obviously, that’s home to me," Mayer said of the shortstop position.

"That’s where I’ve played my whole life. And we’ve had some discussions, going to get some reps there in practice whenever I can. But wherever Trace [tells] you to play, that’s what it’s going to be, whether it’s short, third, second.
