The club fired coach Nico Estévez and sporting director Rodolfo Borrell on Monday after Saturday night’s 2-1 loss to Sporting Kansas City dropped Austin FC (3-6-5, 14 points) to 13th place in the Western Conference.
Kansas City, which is in last place in the West, entered the match with the worst goal differential (minus-22) in MLS. The move also comes on the heels of Wednesday’s 5-0 loss at San Diego , which was the worst loss in Austin FC’s brief history. Borrell, 55, was hired in July 2023 to replace Claudio Reyna.
It was his first sporting director job after previously being an assistant at Manchester City and working in the backrooms of Liverpool and Barcelona. Estévez, 46, was hired in October 2024 to replace Josh Wolff . He spent most of the previous three seasons leading FC Dallas before being fired in June 2024.
In only his second year on the job, Estévez finishes with a 16-19-13 record. Last year, he led Austin FC to a sixth-place finish and playoff spot in the Western Conference and to the final of the U. S.
