Could Rams' Scheelhaase and McKay be NFL's next head coach-GM tandem?

Yahoo Sports

Nate Scheelhaase and John McKay are both in the NFL's accelerator program, a sign that they're both highly regarded around the league.

Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase will be one of several coaches to participate in the NFL's accelerator program this week. Being selected from over 60 candidates, Scheelhaase's inclusion is designed to prepare him for the next offseason hiring cycle after already being a top candidate for offensive coordinator and head coaching jobs over the past two offseasons. Scheelhaase is one of the NFL's brightest coaching stars, who gave up looming collegiate head coaching opportunities to become a Rams assistant.

As a result, Scheelhaase has quickly risen up the coaching ranks since being hired in 2024. Scheelhaase represents a continued issue that will be something to keep an eye on this season. During Sean McVay's tenure, all of his offensive coordinators have gone on to become head coaches.

Scheelhaase is likely to join that list soon. Joining Scheelhaase in Orlando for the program is assistant general manager John McKay. McKay, a candidate for the Minnesota Vikings' general manager job , is another top target for the upcoming offseason.

After the 2025 season, the NFL has bought in on the Rams' way of doing business after the team's success – and the success of the Jacksonville Jaguars . The Jaguars, who are run by former Rams OC Liam Coen and scouting director James Gladstone, rebuilt their entire team in one season, winning the AFC South last year. If McKay does not get the Vikings job, there's good reason to believe that McKay and Scheelhaase could be paired up together for a franchise next season.
