New York Mets starting pitcher Clay Holmes will be sidelined for a while. Holmes fractured his right fibula in Friday night's loss to the New York Yankees . Outfielder Spencer Jones' line drive deflected off Holmes' leg in the fourth inning.

The Mets hope his stay on the injured list will be shorter than anticipated for one simple reason: he could avoid surgery. The right-hander told Chelsea Janes of SNY that surgery may not be required. "I don't think that's going to be the case," Holmes told Janes about the possibility of surgery on his fibula.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza is optimistic that he will pitch again this season. "Yes, definitely we'll see him this season," Mendoza told reporters, according to a report from ESPN .
